The community of Bridlington, United Kingdom is mourning the death of Eckie, the beloved male Eclectus Parrot at Sewerby Hall and Gardens, whose passing has saddened zoo staff, visitors, and animal lovers alike. After battling an untreatable liver tumor, Eckie passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 15, while being cared for by the Head Zoo Keeper and Assistant Head Zoo Keeper. He was remembered as one of the zoo’s most cherished and recognizable residents.
Eckie had called Sewerby Hall and Gardens home for 14 years after being rehomed under exceptional circumstances. Although his exact age was unknown, he was already an older adult when he arrived. Over the years, his remarkable personality, wide vocabulary, and entertaining collection of voices made him a favorite among visitors. Guests delighted in hearing him say phrases such as “Hello Eckie” and “What ‘ya on about?” in a distinctive Yorkshire accent, while keepers fondly recalled his habit of flying into the zoo kitchen to “help” prepare food and sneak a few treats for himself.
In recent months, keepers noticed Eckie had become quieter and was spending more time indoors. Specialist veterinary examinations eventually revealed a large, inoperable tumor on his liver. Following the diagnosis, he returned to Sewerby for palliative care, where he was surrounded by the people who loved him most and enjoyed extra attention alongside his companion, Nellie, who had joined him the previous year. Nellie has even learned some of Eckie’s favorite phrases and continues to greet visitors with the familiar “Hello Eckie.”
Eckie will be remembered for the joy, laughter, and unforgettable moments he brought to generations of visitors. His playful spirit and unmistakable voice made him a treasured member of the Sewerby family, and his legacy will continue through the memories he created and the companionship he shared with Nellie.
