Remembered as the beloved owner of the iconic Flora-Bama Lounge, Pat passed away peacefully in his sleep, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy of hospitality, community, and unforgettable Gulf Coast traditions.
Pat’s remarkable journey began after graduating from the University of Minnesota with a degree in Journalism and Advertising before serving in the U.S. Navy Flight Program as a Public Affairs and Special Services Officer aboard the USS Lexington. Following his military service, he worked his way from bartender to general manager at Seville Quarter, where he helped launch Pensacola’s first Mardi Gras street party. In 1984, he became a partner in the Flora-Bama, transforming the legendary beachside roadhouse into one of the Gulf Coast’s most celebrated destinations. Under his leadership, signature events such as the Interstate Mullet Toss and the Polar Bear Dip became beloved annual traditions.
In announcing his passing, the Flora-Bama family described Pat as a man who turned ordinary moments into lifelong memories. Known for his booming laugh, endless stories, generous spirit, and famous “growth hugs, maintenance hugs, and survival hugs,” he believed that the true heart of Flora-Bama was not the buildings but the people, music, laughter, and friendships that filled them. His ability to make strangers feel like family defined both his business and his life.
